The Service:

Every school has a named school nurse who:

  • Gives specialist advice to children and their families
  • Provides immunisations in school
  • Assists with infectious outbreaks closely linking with Health protection Agency colleagues
  • Supports national and local strategies for improving health

Our staff will see you either in school, your home or at a health centre or GP practice

How this is provided:

Core services in all schools:

  • Ad hoc health assessments: relating to concerns around child protection and child in need reviews
  • Health screening
  • Care plans for children with additional health needs, for example diabetes, asthma and epilepsy
  • Children with special needs: supporting parents and advising teaching staff

Primary schools

  • Targeted school entry health assessments
  • Childhood measurement programme: reception and year six
  • Working with teaching staff to deliver personal, social and health education (PSHE)
  • Classroom based health promotion sessions
  • Parenting support at home and school

Secondary schools

  • Confidential school nurse drop-in sessions
  • Working with teaching staff to deliver personal, social and health education (PSHE)
  • Health promotion – providing advice on a range of topics, including: sexual health, smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight, drugs and alcohol
  • ChatHealth – a confidential school nurse messaging service for young people aged 11-19 years

Additional services

  • Supporting vulnerable children: children at risk, children in need, special needs population
  • Our school age immunisation team co-ordinate all immunisations which take place in schools and offer catch up clinics during the school holidays. The team can be contacted on: 020 3049 7188
