Advising Communities

Age Range:

Parents/carers of children under five, or who are pregnant.

The Service:

A free, confidential and independent advice service for parents and carers of children under five years old, or who are pregnant. Advice in housing, welfare benefits, debt, immigration and employment law. No booking required, just drop in. Advice is delivered through three drop-in services:

  • 1st Place Children and Parents’ Centre - Wednesdays 10am to 12pm
  • Service for those requiring Spanish interpreting only (face to face interpreter provided) 1st Place Children and Parents’ Centre - Thursdays 2pm to 4pm- Crèche provided during the session
  • Kintore Way Children’s Centre – last Wednesday of the month 10am to 12pm

Who is the service for?

Parents/carers of children under five, or who are pregnant.

Criteria for access to service:

Must be a parent/carer of a child under five (i.e. 0-4 years old), or pregnant.

Accessibility of this service
1st Place Children and Parents’ Centre and Kintore Way Children’s Centre are ground floor buildings with no internal steps, wheelchair accessible.
Service is open to any relevant parents, if special provision is needed for a parent to attend the service please telephone ahead so suitable arrangements can be made. Support workers and Key Workers are welcome to attend with parents.
Parents requiring interpreting for languages other than Spanish should attend the Wednesday session at 1st Place, or the session at Kintore Way, and a telephone interpreter will be used. If the parent is able to telephone ahead of the session we will seek to arrange a face to face interpreter.

Confidentiality and Impartiality

We are a confidential and impartial service. We will always seek your permission before contacting any third parties on your behalf. We do not work for the council or for the government. Any personal data you provide us will be held by ourselves and by Sure Start Southwark. A record of advice given is held by Blackfriars Advice Centre only.

We work within the safeguarding framework of Advising Communities and the Children’s Centres we deliver our advice through. We may be obliged to breach confidentiality if we believe a child or a vulnerable adult to be at risk.
