The 2nd Chance Programme

The 2nd Chance Programme is the leading employment training programme in South London for 18-25 year olds helping them to unlock their full potential by achieving qualifications, gaining valuable work experience and ultimately identifying and succeeding in long-term sustainable employment.

Type of Service:

The 2nd Chance Programme is a free 20 week programme that was established in Elephant and Castle to help 18-25 year olds gain necessary qualifications in English, Maths and IT, build their confidence and identify a pathway into employment.

Who is the service for?

The 2nd Chance Programme is designed for 18-25 year olds who need to gain qualifications up to Level 2 and are wanting to start a career, training or further education. The 2nd Chance Programme also provides professional assistance to help young people develop employment skills, undertake work experience and enable them to identify the best possible routes to success. The 2nd Chance programme provides free breakfast and lunch for all participants and provide free travel to get to and from home.

Our Eligibility Criteria:

  • 18-25 years old
  • Not in Full-time education, employment or training
  • No qualifications higher than a Level 3 and require their English, maths and IT
  • Live within greater London
  • They have the right to work in the UK (proof is required)
  • Can commit to a full-time programme

Accessibility of this service:

The 2nd Chance Programme is located on Larcom Street in Elephant and Castle just a short walk away from Elephant and Castle Train and Underground stations.

The 2nd Chance Programme is also well-placed to be found by bus and can be accessed via the 12, 35, 45, 148, 171, N89, N171, P5 bus routes.

The 2nd Chance Programme is located on the 2nd floor of Larcom House above Unlocking Potential, and Octavia House and has lift access.

How is this provided?

The 2nd Chance Programme is a 20 week free training programme. The first 12 weeks consists of English, Maths and IT functional skills training combined with 3 employer-led projects that develop employability skills. In week 14 the trainees take their exams. At this point, those trainees that are ready for work are placed into employment. Weeks 15 – 19 consist of work placement preparation, a work placement opportunity and finally employment into an industry that they are interested in. A formal Graduation ceremony takes place at the end of the 20 weeks to celebrate their success.

How Can I access this service?

The 2nd Chance Programme is free for all participants. This includes a free breakfast and free travel to and from home to the 2nd Chance Programme.

How is this service funded?

The 2nd Chance Programme is a part of UP: Unlocking Potential. A charity initiative that helps a range of children and young people across London.

Confidentiality and Impartiality:

In addition to the academic and employability skills that the 2nd Chance programme delivers, the core elements of the programme are supported by dedicated coaches who provide a safe space to help support and guide trainees once they are on the programme. This allows our coaches to help motivate our young people or address any potential barriers that will impact them on reaching their full potential.

  • An employment rate of 71%
  • 61% of young people attending the programme will improve by one functional skill throughout the programme.
  • 62 young people graduated the programme in 2016
