Literacy difficulties (including dyslexia)

Advice and support for schools

The Inclusion and Monitoring team are working with a specialist dyslexia teacher and assessor to improve the understanding of how to support children and young people within their settings, through a free training programme.  This is in line with the recommendations by PATOSS and the British Dyslexia Association who recognise that most children and young people do not require a diagnosis of dyslexia but do require teaching and support staff to be well trained to support children with literacy difficulties. The Southwark Dyslexia Service has created an information pack which can help schools support pupils with literacy difficulties, including dyslexia.  Download the information pack here. (pdf, 688kb)

  1. Training Programme:
  • The training programme was offered, without charge, to all Southwark primary and secondary mainstream settings. There were three training sessions for schools, focussing on identifying needs, conducting school-based assessments, and improving classroom practice.

2025-26 Training Programme:

  • The training programme is again offered, without charge, to all Southwark primary and secondary mainstream settings. The sessions will be delivered by a specialist teacher.
  • There will be two sessions over the year, focussing on specific interventions with children and young people who have persistent difficulties with reading, spelling, handwriting, and organisation.
  • SENCOs who were unable to attend the sessions in 2024-25 are able to contact the Inclusion and Monitoring Team for advice and support.
Advice for parents/carers

The specialist assessor is currently working on a document to support parents of children and young people with literacy difficulties and dyslexia. This will uploaded to the site in due course.
