ZAP workshops are free, practical sessions for young people aged 9-16 and their parents or carers. They give help and tools to challenge bullying.

What happens at ZAP?

At a free ZAP workshop, Kidscape specialist trainers run two separate sessions: one for young people and a supporting session for parents and carers.

Session for young people

The session for young people is a 90-minute therapeutic workshop for 9-16 year-olds who are dealing with a bullying situation, or who have experienced bullying. We provide them with a range of practical strategies that build confidence and self-esteem so they feel more equipped to take action and prevent bullying behaviour. The workshop is proven to increase confidence, happiness and wellbeing.

The session for young people has the following goals:

Assertiveness skills

The core focus of ZAP is to teach young people how to be assertive, a proven technique for preventing and tackling bullying.

This involves helping children to understand the difference between aggression, assertiveness and passivity, and how these are relevant to bullying dynamics. Young people will also learn a range of practical assertive strategies that will help them to deal with bullying situations that may occur in the future.

Raising self-esteem

This means teaching young people how to identify and be proud of their own unique strengths and skills, encouraging them to understand that the bullying is not their fault. Through positive reinforcement and interaction with other young people, children are helped to realise that they are not to blame, and they are not alone.

Exploring bullying roles

Children learn to define the terms ‘bully’, ‘bystander’ and ‘target’, and explore the types of behaviour that may be associated with these terms.

Positive body language

Children learn about the impact of positive body language in relation to being assertive.

Cyberbullying

Children get a greater awareness of safety risks when using the internet.
