Courses

There are many organisations offering a variety of courses in Southwark and the local area. Some organisations offer short courses to help you brush up on your existing skills, or learn about an area you are interested in. Some organisations offer longer training courses where you might gain qualifications or be able to move onto further training or employment. Some courses might be on-site or online, whilst others could involve a mixture of learning in a classroom and in a working environment.

Construction Youth Trust’s mission is to inspire and support young people to fulfil their career potential by connecting them with meaningful opportunities within the construction and built environment sector. Social mobility is at the heart of our work. Through our long-standing links with a wide range of employers, we connect young people directly to relatable role models, work experience placements, and, ultimately, employment, training, and education opportunities.

Our programme is designed to support young Southwark residents aged 16-30 who are currently not in education, employment or training and are interested in construction and built environment careers. Through an employer-led programme combining bespoke 1-1 coaching and group sessions, we aim to help young people to discover careers best suited to their skills and interests and support them to make positive progression on their career journey.

You could learn and gain Construction Multi-Skills, Level 1 Health & Safety and a CSCS card.

Construction Youth Trust deliver programmes all year around and have taster days to try and see if you would like to join us.

Southbank Mosaics are running their award winning courses for children interested in art and design for special needs students in the new academic year. Students make mosaic work for exhibition and develop their personal portfolios in a professional artisan studio.

This is for individual students and groups interested in art and design. We work with mainstream and Special Education Needs children. We also accommodate parents and SEN assistants or teachers. All children have the option of taking accredited courses in Level 2 (Introduction to Mosaic Making: Towards Employment) and every child who has taken a course with us in the past, has successfully achieved credits, awards or certificates. Some children have been coming to us for 5 years, with two students returning to volunteer at our sessions. Our central London location means we also visit the many galleries, festivals and events in the vicinity.

Criteria for access to service
Paid for service: £480 for term, one day per week. Can negotiate bespoke service. Evening and weekend courses for teachers and adults start from £150.00.

Training provided:
We provide a safe and nurturing environment where students can learn the practical skills of mosaic making, working on their own projects or contributing as part of a team to our public realm projects. Students will be able to gain the following:

• Mosaic making, fixing and installation skills
• Understanding of how to price their own work (if they wish to sell work)
• Understanding of how to operate and behave in a working art studio
• Experience of team work
