Parents and Carers - Training and Information Programmes

Resources for Autism is a charity working across London and the West Midlands.  They have funding for five years to work with 16-25 year old autistic young people and their families. To qualify, families must be either Southwark or Lewisham residents.

Parents and carers of individuals with autism can attend workshops throughout the year.  These are safe places where you can learn and share experiences with others.

We are facilitating a series of one-hour online lunch and learn training to capacity build professionals in Lewisham and Southwark.

Our first Lunch and Learn session is on ADHD and Autism, Tuesday 16^th April between 12-1pm on Teams.

By coming to any of our trainings we hope to improve your understanding of autism and neurodiversity whilst equipping you with skills and strategies to better support autistic members in the community.

Whether you're a parent, caregiver, educator, professional or simply interested in learning more, join us for a lunch and learn introduction to ADHD and Autism.

We will explore the three different types of ADHD, presentations with co-occurring ADHD and Autism, discuss strategies to support challenges, look into valuable associated strengths and more.

Resources for Autism is very excited to deliver our first face to face workshop for parents of autistic young people in Lewisham and Southwark.

‘Navigating difficult emotions in family relationships’ will be facilitated by Resources for Autisms Play Therapist, Joe and Person-Centred Therapist, Mathilde.

When: Friday 26^th April 2024, 10.45am-2pm (refreshments will be provided)

Where: The Lewisham Music Hub First Floor, The Fellowship Inn, Randlesdown Road, London SE6 3BT. 

Join us in this therapeutic space for parents/carers of autistic children and young people. 

During this two-hour workshop, you'll have the opportunity to discuss, express through creative activities and delve into your emotions as parents of autistic children. 

Sharing our lived experiences can be empowering, and our aim is to support and guide these conversations.  We'll blend therapeutic techniques to navigate challenging family dynamics with practical communication tools to enhance connections both with others and within ourselves.

Expect deep talk and emotions. Please only join if you feel comfortable and safe in an emotionally open space.

Autism 'Next Steps' is a course for parents of children with a diagnosis of Autism under the age of 5. 'Next Steps' is delivered by the Autism Support Team in Southwark.

What could you achieve through 'Next Steps':

• Be empowered.

• Increase your knowledge of how to support your child in the very important days of early years development.

• Meet other parents.

• Be supported in the time between diagnosis and school placement

Cygnet is a six week course run by Southwark's Autism Support Team and is designed to:

• increase parents understanding of autistic spectrum conditions

• help parents develop their knowledge on how a child on the autistic spectrum experiences the world and what drives their behaviour

• guide parents through practical strategies they can use with children

• direct parents to relevant ASC resources

• give parents the opportunity to meet with other parents who have had similar experiences and to gain support and learn from each other

For parents of a child on the autistic spectrum, coping with the onset of puberty and their child’s emerging sexuality can be challenging. Knowing what to teach, how/when to teach it and what to expect can be daunting.

These three sessions have a different delivery style to the Cygnet core programme. Because of the nature of the subject matter it was felt that a far more activity-based approach would put parents at ease more quickly and therefore enhance learning and mutual support.  The course is delivered by Southwark's Autism Support Team

As a parent, discovering that your child or young person is experiencing bullying, or is involved in bullying, can be daunting. As parents how we choose to react and how we respond to bullying behaviour is vital to reaching a successful outcome for everyone involved.

Our Bullying Awareness Training for Parents and Carers course is specifically designed to develop awareness of bullying and cyberbullying. The session explores recent guidance, news articles, updates in law and offers a myriad of practical solutions for parents to effectively support their children at a time of need. We empower parents to work collaboratively with the organisation involved.

Our Online Safety and Cyberbullying Awareness for Parents and Carers course will help parents and carers to understand the benefits and the exciting potential of the online world. The session will also highlight potential risks associated with keeping children and young people safe online.

The Council for Disabled Children has developed a suite of online training for CDC members and affiliated organisations and services.
